Mobile Parking App Makes Payment Simple

Parking in downtown St. Paul? Feed meter with mobile app

Motorists in downtown St. Paul can now use their phones to pay for metered parking.

The PassportParking app, which is available for free on the Android and Apple iOS operating systems, allows users to enter their space number and pay for parking with a credit or debit card, according to a news release issued Tuesday by the St. Paul Public Works Department.

A 15-cent fee is added to each one-time transaction, but the fee is waived for users who store money in their Passport account. The minimum deposit is $10.

The app also allows users to add more time to their meter remotely, and sends them reminders when their meter is about to expire, the company’s website says.

Although the service will initially be available only downtown, it soon will spread to the area around the Capitol and University Avenue, the news release said. Charlotte, N.C.,-based Passport operates in more than 50 North American cities, including Boston, Toronto, Chicago and Detroit.

In addition to the app, users can access the service through the company’s website at ppprk.com, or over the phone by dialing 651-571-4037.

Minneapolis launched a similar service last August.
